The Controller is responsible for leading all accounting and financial reporting activities for a growing real estate investment and property management platform. This role oversees property-level and corporate accounting, ensures timely and accurate financial reporting, strengthens internal controls, and supports operational and investment decision-making.
The ideal candidate brings deep experience in real estate and property management accounting, thrives in a multi-entity environment, and is comfortable partnering with senior leadership, operations teams, and external advisors. This position plays a key role in scaling systems, processes, and people as the portfolio continues to evolve.
Core Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Lead all day-to-day accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll oversight, bank reconciliations, owner distributions, debt service, property taxes, and cash activity.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for corporate entities and property-level entities, including consolidated reporting.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with GAAP across all entities.
- Own the monthly close process and establish timelines to drive timely reporting.
- Oversee accounting for a multi-property, multi-entity real estate portfolio.
- Monitor property performance, operating results, and cash flow trends.
- Assist with acquisitions, dispositions, refinances, and asset onboarding, including review of closing statements and integration into accounting systems.
- Maintain organized entity, ownership, and debt documentation.
- Treasury & Cash Management
- Manage cash positions across multiple entities and bank accounts.
- Develop short- and medium-term cash flow forecasts.
- Coordinate lender reporting and ensure covenant compliance.
- Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
- Maintain and optimize the Yardi platform; ensure system integrity and best practice usage.
- Design and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, and scalability across accounting workflows.
- Lead accounting-related system implementations or upgrades as needed.

- Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff or oversee third-party accounting providers.
- Serve as a trusted partner to property operations, asset management, and executive leadership.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and process-oriented accounting culture.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Background in public accounting (audit or tax) strongly preferred.
- 8-12+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within property management, real estate, or real estate investment.
- Hands-on experience with Yardi is required.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, real estate accounting, fixed assets, depreciation, and multi-entity structures.
- Experience with consolidations, intercompany accounting, and complex entity structures.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with financial systems and large datasets.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to build and manage a high-performing team.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
